Celebrated filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, known for crafting some of Hindi cinema’s most evocative and enduring narratives such as Jab We Met, Rockstar, Tamasha, and Chamkila, recently shared a fascinating glimpse into the meticulous casting process of his upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga.

Speaking on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, Imtiaz revealed the thought and sensitivity that went into selecting the ensemble cast, ensuring that each character resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. At the centre of this narrative lies a uniquely layered role—that of a 95-year-old Sikh man navigating one of the most intense phases of his life. For this finely nuanced portrayal, Imtiaz turned to the legendary Naseeruddin Shah, recognising in him the ability to bring gravitas and subtlety to a character rarely explored on screen. Interestingly, the filmmaker noted that Shah had seldom portrayed a turbaned Sikh gentleman before, making the casting feel both refreshing and creatively invigorating.
For the younger arc of the same character, Imtiaz sought an actor who could believably evolve into this older persona. He found that potential in Vedang Raina, whose natural charm and screen presence aligned seamlessly with the narrative’s requirements. Meanwhile, Sharvari Wagh was envisioned with a distinctive aesthetic—one inspired by the elegance of 1940s cinema, blending sophistication with an understated sense of intrigue.
Adding further depth to the film is Diljit Dosanjh, whose association with Imtiaz traces back to Chamkila. The filmmaker revealed that the idea of casting Diljit had been quietly taking shape over time, eventually aligning organically with the evolving narrative.
With such a thoughtfully curated ensemble, Main Vaapas Aaunga promises a cinematic experience rich in character, emotion, and storytelling finesse. Imtiaz Ali’s signature approach—where casting becomes an extension of the narrative itself—once again sets the stage for a film that is poised to leave a lasting impression on audiences.
