Abhishek Banerjee—fondly remembered as Jana from the blockbuster Stree franchise—is making a much-awaited return to his first love: theatre, after two decades away from the stage. Long before he became a familiar face in Bollywood and a standout presence on OTT platforms, Banerjee’s artistic roots were firmly planted in Delhi’s theatre circuit. Now, twenty years later, he is reuniting with his original theatre troupe for a compelling mono-satirical comedy titled Tu Kya Hai, set to premiere this month at Mumbai’s iconic NCPA.

The play delivers a sharp and witty commentary on the countless dreamers who abandon the security of home to chase the uncertain pursuit of performance art. Their journeys—marked by struggle, absurdity, and fleeting triumphs—blur the thin line between comedy and tragedy. Over time, these struggles evolve into anecdotes, as though life itself were a theatre of the absurd.
In this solo act, Banerjee directs the satire inward, drawing from his own experiences to expose the fault lines of ambition, society, and self-worth, blending humour with striking honesty. Tu Kya Hai unfolds in three vivid chapters: a middle-class household where art is dismissed as a pastime, the chaotic yet comical hustle of Mumbai’s entertainment world, and the intimate, unspoken conflicts that surface in the quiet of night.
Reflecting on his return, Banerjee shared, “Theatre is where I learnt to breathe as an artist. It taught me rhythm, truth, and how to fail without fear. For the last 20 years, I’ve been chasing roles and building a career, but the stage always kept calling me back. Tu Kya Hai is deeply personal—it’s a mirror to my life, and to anyone who has ever questioned themselves. Coming back to the stage with my old friends feels like closing a circle, or perhaps starting a new one. This isn’t just a play—it’s a homecoming.”
With humour, poignancy, and Banerjee’s magnetic presence, Tu Kya Hai promises an evening of raw storytelling and heartfelt reflection that will linger long after the curtain falls.
