Kolkata film festival to screen Lihaaf in competition round

Rahat Kazmi’s upcoming movie Lihaaf which has already won hearts of people round the globe is all set to participate in 25th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) in Competition round next week.

Organized by West Bengal Film Centre and founded in 1995, KIFF is the second oldest international film festival in India. The organization is recognized by International Federation of Film Producers’ Association (FIAPF-Paris), an international authority of film festivals.

KIFF would be inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the presence of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Mahesh Bhatt, Rakhee Gulzar, Kumar Shahani among others at Netaji Indoor Stadium on November 8. This year, the festival, which will continue till November 15, has received approximately 2,500 entries from 76 countries which include 214 feature films, 152 short films and documentaries for competition and non-competition rounds.

Nevertheless, the parameters of competition are on two levels, Indian and International level. Lihaaf would be participating in the competition of Indian Film Languages, consisting Roya Sadat, Ajja Husain, and Jeffrey Jeturian as jury members. Meanwhile, the Best Film would receive Rs 7 lakh and the Best Director in this category would receive cash prize of Rs 5 lakh along with Hiralal Sen Memorial Award.

The festival would be attended by the starcast of Lihaaf along with the director and the producers in Kolkata. The team is excited to participate in the event after the successful screening of their film worldwide.

Directed by Rahat Kazmi, the film is produced by Tariq Khan, Zeba Sajid, Namita Lal, Ashish Wagh, Umesh Shukla and co-produced by Oscar winner Marc Baschet. The film features Tannishtha Chatterjee, Sonal Sehgal and Anushka Sen in the lead roles while Shoib Nikash Shah and Mir Sarwar would be seen in parallel lead roles. Rahat Kazmi’s film Lihaaf is all set to showcase at 5 significant film festivals of the world namely International Film Festival of Kerala, India Week Hamburg, International Queer Film Festival Playa (Mexico), 25th Kolkata International Film Festival and Gangneung International Film Festival (South Korea).

Rahat Kazmi is literally going places with his range and quality of work. The director, who was recently in news for staging a dialogue with Oscar awardee and producer Marc Baschet on their Indo-France co-production Ismat Chugtai’s Lihaaf at the Cannes Film Festival, is a proud man now. The film is now selected to be officially screened at five major film festivals being held in Hamburg, Korea, Mexico, Kolkata and Kerala.

The story of Lihaaf revolves around the most controversial and celebrated story of legendary Indian writer Ismat Chugtai, which deal with issues of homosexuality, women’s sexuality and sex as a taboo in Indian society. Tannistha Chatterjee plays the iconic role of Ismat Chughtai. She is the only Indian actress to have been ever nominated for BAFTA. Meanwhile, Sonal Sehgal plays Begum Jaan, who has acted in many films and is known for her performance in Nagesh Kuknoor’s acclaimed Aashayein.

Singapore based actress and producer Namita Lal will be seen playing Rabbo in the film, and her company Nutzaboutme Cinema are also producers of the film.

The film has been co-written by Rahat Kazmi and Sonal Sehgal. The producers are Rahat Kazmi, Tariq Khan, Zeba Sajid, Namita Lal (Singapore), Umesh Shukla, Utpal Acharya and Ashish Wagh. It is co-produced by Oscar winning producer Marc Baschet (known for Oscar winning No Man’s Land and Lunch Box and Golda Sellam of Cinelink France is a consultant on this project.

Shoib Nikash Shah plays the role of Manto. Shoib has done many films including Million Dollar Nomad and Mantostaan. Veteran bollywood actor Virendra Saxena will be seen in an important role in the film, too.

Marc said, “I first heard the story of Lihaaf (The Quilt) when I met Namita in the film bazaar in Goa in November last year. I was struck by the theme of the story and decided to follow the development of the film as a mentor. Golda, who also heard the narration from Namita in Goa, was happy to be a consultant to this team. Apart from the story, I was also very impressed with this young team of professional film makers who bring such sensitive, delicate stories to life on the big screen.”

The producers plan to announce the release date the film soon. The film will take you behind the curtain, play in the shadows of same-sex desire, and will lift the veil off the longings of the women in Muslim households.

Rahat Kazmi’s Lihaaf wins Best Film LGBT Award at IIFM, Boston USA

Lihaaf was screened at Sama Film festival, Sweden and Indian International film festival Boston, USA yesterday and it was in nominations for best film at Sweden and, best film, best director and best actress at IIFFM Boston. Lihaaf won best film title whereas Neena Gupta won best actress and Sonal Sehgal was was also a nominee for the film congratulated the senior actress through social media. Rahat Kazmi’s Lihaaf is traveling to many countries and top film festivals and the team is totally overwhelmed with the response they are getting from all over the world. Film is yet to screen in Mexico and Hamburg soon where audience is waiting for the film.

Lihaaf has become the talk of the time before its release. Makers reveal that they are getting distribution opportunities from different countries for theatrical distribution in different languages, so they are just working on a plan to streamline the distribution of the film.

Lihaaf’s show sold out in Singapore Film festival

We all know that filmmaker Rahat Kazmi’s film Lihaaf is set to premiere in Singapore South Asian International Film Festival (Sg. SAIFF) this Sunday. The big news is that the film’s demand is so much that all the tickets have been already booked two days prior to the show!

Singapore film lovers came to know about its houseful screening at Berlin and Babylon and booked its tickets in advance and now when more people are turning up, there are no seats left!

Director Rahat Kazmi is overwhelmed on receiving so much love from the audience abroad. Sharing this delightful news, he said, “People are enquiring for tickets and approaching us for more screenings. Seeing this huge response, we are planning for a theatrical release in the country soon after the festival gets over.”

Actress Sonal Sehgal, Anushka Sen and Namita Lal are present at Singapore tp present he film for audience for Sunday show along with the filmmaker Rahat Kazmi.

He further added that distributors from Germany and USA have already expressed their interest for theatrical release of the film and so, Lihaaf would be screened for normal audience in these countries and now, also in Singapore for those who could not manage to grab a seat in premiere shows.

For the show on September 1, 2019 (Sunday) at Golden Village Suntec City at 6:15 pm, Rahat Kazmi would be attending the festival along with his team which includes actresses Sonal Sehgal and Anushka Sen. Rahat Kazmi’s film Lihaaf won German hearts

Indian International filmmaker Rahat Kazmi’s film, Lihaaf, recently premiered as the closing film at 16th Indisches Filmfestival, Stuttgart 2019.

The film, which is based on Ismat Chughtai’s most celebrated and most-controversial story, garnered a lot of appreciation from the audience present at the time of screening.

The director and his team could not mark their presence as they were shooting for their next film. However, the actress of the movie, Sonal Sehgal attended the festival on behalf of her team, alongwith the Oscar-winning producer of the movie, Marc Baschet and Co-Editor and Creative Consultant of the film, Golda Sellam, who is also a renowned Film Expert of Europe.

The 16th Indisches Filmfestival was held in Stuttgart (Germany) from July 17 to 21, 2019 and presented feature films, documentaries, children’s and animated films of all length and format, followed by an Award Ceremony on July 21, 2019 for best feature, documentary, short film and so on.

Actress Sonal Sehgal who is also a co-writer in the movie says, “Lihaaf was supposed to premiere at Stuttgart as closing film but due to the heavy demand, the organisers screened it twice. Nonetheless, we received an amazing response from the audience.”

Meanwhile, Lihaaf was also screened at Indo-German Filmweek which was held in Babylon (Berlin) from July 11 to 24, 2019. Started in February 2013 by Stephan Ottenbruch, the Indo-German Filmweek is held annually where Indian films of all languages are screened followed by workshops and discussions with the filmmakers and team.

Lihaaf had two screenings at Indo-German Filmweek and there also, the organisers added another screening on public demand. Sonal Sehgal added, “Usually, the audience watch the screening and leaves the hall whereas, in both Berlin and Stuttgart, we were amazed to see that Q&A round after our screening went on for more than 45 minutes. The audience were just so overwhelmed. She was surprised to know that German students had read Lihaaf as it was in their curriculum. They asked questions about the making of the film, women author writing such a bold story, on homosexuality and how the theme is more relevant in the present era than at the time, the story was written.”

No denying the fact, Lihaaf attracted German Press and made headlines in both the festivals. The film is co-written and directed by Rahat Kazmi and produced by Tariq Khan, Zeba Sajid, Namita Lal, Umesh Shukla, and Ashish Wagh and co-produced by Marc Baschet.

Indo-British actor Jitendra Rai to Pair with Hina Khan

Jitendra Rai came into limelight with Dragonflies Only Live for 24 Hours, which was showcased in British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) 2018.

This India-born actor has worked in innumerable Hollywood projects under his screen name Jitendra Kumar. He has appeared in TV series for BBC2, ITV and also, in a crime series of US channel. He worked with Idris Elba in a commercial of US based company. Adding to his credits, he was also featured in a commercial for Stella Artois. Along with his innumerable appearances in films and on TV, he has featured in an international music video. Jitendra has also worked with Harry Potter actor Adrein Rawlins,s recently in a film where there are only two main characters played by Rawlins and Jitendra.

He marked his Bollywood debut also with Rahat Kazmi, same as Hina Khan. We can say that Indian International Filmmaker, Rahat Kazmi has left no stone unturned in gifting some of the best actors and actresses to Bollywood.

Meanwhile, after so much appreciation his films have garnered, Rahat Kazmi poured his heart out on his social media handle. Expressing his feelings, he wrote, “A close to heart, slice of life, inspiring story about celebration of life, my directorial feature “WishList” starts rolling in Europe having talented lead pair-Indian Diva Hina Khan and Indo-British actor Jitendra Rai, also starring for the first time multiple award winner French producer Francois d’Artemare and my favorite Sinagpore based actor Namita Lal along with many other German, Swiss and Indian actors.”

Directed by Rahat Kazmi, Wish List deals with regular issues and choices one takes in life but in inspirational ways and also, offers a new perspective. The shooting has already begun in Europe but the release date is yet to be announced. No denying the fact, the team will surprise us soon with the scenic beauty of Europe on big screen.

Hina Khan to star again in Rahat Kazmi’s next film?

The scintillating face of television shows and now Bollywood, Hina Khan is grabbing films back to back. After her red carpet stunning appearance at Cannes Film Festival recently, she would be once again seen with her debutant director and international film maker Rahat Kazmi.

The director who has written and directed many films and has worked with legends like Marc Buschet, launched Hina Khan into Bollywood with his film Lines, which made the headlines lately.

After Cannes, the actress had extended her stay in Europe which was presumed to be her vacation but recently, she was spotted with Rahat Kazmi and team, perhaps shooting for her next venture.

Rahat Kazmi confirmed the rumors saying, “We have signed Hina Khan for three films consecutively and here, in Europe, we are working on our next film where once again Hina Khan would be in a leading role.”

On asking as what made you cast Hina Khan again, the director answered with a smile saying he had never imagined that she would be such a professional and hard-working actress. He added, “Hina gets into the skin of the character she is playing. She is so realistic and dedicated that we signed three films in a row without giving it a second thought.”

The actress who keep her fans updated on social media through her vacation and shoot pictures, said she is glad to shoot in Europe with Rahat Kazmi and team. She excitedly said, “Our next film is being shot in some of the most beautiful locations of Europe and through this, even I am getting to explore a lot. Anyone who loves to travel would love to watch the scenic beauty captured and portrayed in the film.”

Hina Khan is an enthusiastic traveller and that is well explicit from her Instagram pictures. Talking about her next film, she said, “The character which I am playing is very different from Lines, where the role demanded being a simple Kashmiri girl, however, in my next, which is titled, Wish List, the role which I am playing is close to my heart as the character resembles a lot to who I am in real life.”

Nevertheless, Rahat Kazmi is famous for writing and directing out-of-the-box movies. Some of his famous work includes Identity Card (2014), Mantostaan (2017), while four of his greatest work namely Lihaaf, 2 Band Radio, Oxygen and Lines are yet to release. He is internationally acclaimed director whose several movies have premiered in International Film Festivals all over the world. Recently, he released the first look of Lines at Cannes, through which Hina Khan will step into Bollywood.

Hina Khan shoots in the exotic locales of Kashmir for Bollywood debut

After playing Akshara (Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai) for many years, Hina Khan is not someone to sit and enjoy her laurels. She has emerged as one of the most talented, stylish and glamorous actresses who exudes immense versatility in another show Kasauti Zindagi Kay. The actress is literally going places and now, she is all set to make her Bollywood debut. Titled Lines, Hina will play the lead in this film that is a love story and revolves around the repercussions of the Kargil war.

Lines is an international feature film; a tragic story set on life and plight of people on the border, set around the grassroots effect of Kargil war in Kashmir. The film throws light on the life of people who live close to LOC on both the sides and their suffering. The film is directed by Hussain Khan whose name recently appeared in IAS exams, he is responsible for making first intentional Kashmiri feature film in his 45 year career.

After a successful collaboration with Oscar winner Marc Baschet for their recent film Lihaaf, Rahat Kazmi Films, Tariq Khan Productions and Zeba Sajid films; the Indie group which produced many path breaking films like Mantostaan, Identity Card and Side A & Side B are now ready with the complete production of Lines.

Ask Hina about her debut and she says, “It was a wonderful experience for me, specially shooting in Kashmir. Working with Farida Ji was a delight. I am really excited about the film release and how the audiences will react to it.” The director Hussain Khan says, “We have worked very hard on the film and since this is a sensitive topic it is important to keep people’s sentiments in mind.”

Written by Kunwar Shakti Singh and Rahat Kazmi, Rahat Kazmi is the producer of the film. Aplha Productions and HIRO’S FAAR BETTER PICTURES have co-produced the film in association with Seven Two Creations and Assad Motion Pictures. The other actors in the film include Rishi Bhutani (Bolo Ram), Zahid Qureshi and Ahmer Haider.
