Suparna Marwah fondly remembers her ‘No jaggery No shoot’ incident on the sets of San’84 Justice

Kabir Singh, Patiala House actress Suparna Marwah who plays an important role in the upcoming film San 84 Justice ? is very fond of jaggery and her fondness for jaggery became quite an eventful incident on the sets of the film. Her assistant would always keep a nice little piece of a special fine quality jaggery wrapped in a foil for her to use anytime during the shoot. She also used this as her special formulae to clear throat and maintain good voice texture as jaggery is known to serve as a natural energy booster and stimulant also very good for throat.

However one late night shoot schedule followed by an early morning next day lineup led her assistant to forget the jaggery at home and she ended up without it at the shoot. All was well until Suparna asked for her favourite savoury and there was none, the nervous girl shivered and explained her limitation in getting it, she was very sure there was a storm coming her way and Suparnaji being the actor of class that she is made it look and sound exactly like that through her convincing expressions. The nervous girl threw all the apologies through a bouquet of words that she possibly could while Suparna ji was clear that No Jaggery no shoot till the drama continued for few minutes till Suparna ji bursted into laughed and gave it away that she was simply pulling a fast one

Suparna continued to laughs her heart out while we spoke to her about this. She described how the shoot ended successfully even with with no jaggery. This did become one of the popular lines on the sets No Jaggery No shoot and as a result of this next day there were boxes of Jaggery brought in by various people including a special one that was gifted fondly by Ashish Sahdev who had important scenes lined up with her and Ashish told us, I told Suparna ji, well I have made sure my scenes with you are going perfectly smooth, both had good laughs all through as they shot further. Suparna was actually overwhelmed with the love poured in from everyone on the sets with this lovely gesture. Director Sandeep Rana too had his take in this incident, he said It was a moment of pride for me to see my San 84 Justice team bond like a family and as a director there is nothing better to achieve, I knew from this moment we will have a good film in hand

The transformation of Ashish Sahdev for Sikh character

Ashish Sahdev says I am happy that I could imbibe all the mannerisms of Sikh culture and portray it on screen.

Ashish who is making his Bollywood debut with the film San 84 Justice, has all the research of the entire team behind him to look like a real Sardar of that era. The actor shared how he did many things to imbibe the Sikh rituals and tradition to be a part of his life. He said, “I visited the Gurudwara regularly, did seva, washed utensils and cleaned them, sat with volunteers and understood the Sikh’s perspective and honour towards their faith.”

Stressing on the way, Sikhs wear their turban, he said, “The turban has really evolved over a period of times. Earlier the turban cloth used to be two meters or more in length with a thick fabric and now the fabric is much thinner and fine so the turbans are usually smaller. In the film audiences will see me wearing slightly bigger turban and shirts or kurtas to match the look of 80s. The entire process of transforming into a Sardar was a month long process and to portray Ajit certain mannerisms became natural as I grew confident.”

The actor also added how the turbans were made to look real. He said, “The turbans were not supposed to look very neat and pleated as in those days turban cloth was not ironed. So, the minutest details were kept in check. I am happy that I could imbibe all of it.”

Writer-director Sandeep Kumar Rana is delighted with Ashish’s casting and says “If u look the character, half the work is done, and that exactly is why we chose Ashish to play the role of a Sikh, because he looked like one easily.  Once the costume trial was done complete with a turban, our character was standing in front of us.  Then his dedication to grow actual beard and maintain that look for months was commendable and matched the zeal of stars of the day like Aamir khan, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor who get into their characters deeply and resonate the characters very well.

Lights, camera and heavy action on the sets of San’84 Justice

San 84 Justice, a film that revolves around turmoil entering lives of Sikh families who were tortured during PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984, has some heavy duty action happening on the sets. The scene is about a tussle between brothers Gurfateh played by Vipin Sharma and Ajit Singh played by Ashish Sahdev. In this scene they were informed by Manoj Bakshi (who played an important role in Bajrangi Bhaijaan) and plays Jaradhan in this film. He tells them that hundreds of rioters are killing Sikhs mercilessly and unexpectedly one of the brothers decides to go at the riot site to fetch something very important. The action starts immediately after this scene which is intense, emotionally charged and it took several takes to go around it as it involved a tussle with the tall and muscular Manoj Bakshi stopping the brothers from going out of their home.

Director Sandeep Rana and his team gave a lengthy and detailed briefing to the actors Manoj Bakshi, Vipin Sharma, Suparna Marwah and Ashish Sahdev on the intensity and finesse needed to pull off this scene as the action begins hereafter. One of the shots in this scene involved Manoj stopping Vipin physically, and since he is taller and hefty, he was being conscious not to come on very heavily. However, he was asked to put more force and intensity repeatedly by Sandeep, as a result Manoj practically froze the other actors so much that they could not move away an inch and the scene had to be reshot multiple times till the right intensity was achieved, it became tough for everyone

Once the scene was perfected the actors and the entire team had a good laugh about the varying force and action delivered by Manoj Bakshi at every take filmed for this scene.
