Even as he is awaiting the release of his mammoth international movie Kenneth Branagh’s Death On The Nile this month alongside a sublime cast comprising Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer amongst others. India’s latest export to the West – Ali Fazal has bagged the lead role in the prestige project Codename: Johnny Walker. The war drama is based on the New York Times bestseller by the same name and is co-written by American Sniper co-writer Jim Delfice.
A quick search will inform you that Codename: Johnny Walker which is written by Alan Wenkus former writer of the famed chat series – The Tonight Show and Straight Outta Compton, for which he got an Academy Nomination too. The writing of the film has been in the works since September 2015.
Fazal, currently in the midst of promoting his show Mirzapur, in a chat with GQ Magazine of which is the cover star of the month spoke about his latest project.
Once the pandemic permits, Fazal will be in an LA studio shooting for the lead role in the film.
Fazal is quoted saying in the magazine, “People [in the West] are now more open to writing parts that can have actors cast from across the canvas,” mentioning British writer, rapper, and actor Riz Ahmed. “This is very hard to do because you have to get geography out of your head. Naturally, not all movies can do that – an Indian film about a farmer in the hinterland can’t cast Tom Cruise.”
Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile is confirmed for October 23 2020 release. This will be one of the the first major international pictures to see a global release. And looking at these new stills of the film featuring Ali, the actor embodies every bit of the 1930s golden era suave looks.

The fine ensemble of Death on the Nile reunited virtually to kick off the promotions of their film. Based on a 1937 novel by the same name, the Agatha Christie bestseller has been adapted on screen by Kenneth Branagh, who doubles up to play Hercule Poirot in the film. The film is a follow up of the 2017 project by Branagh – Murder on the Orient Express. The story of Death on the Nile revolves around Poirot’s Egyptian vacation that goes wrong after he gets involved in a love triangle. The glorious ensemble includes Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, Letitia Wright, Armie Hammer, Annette Bening amongst others. The film was shot between September and December in London last year.
Earlier, the film’s promotions were charted out differently which included an exhaustive international tour for the film. As the world found itself battling a pandemic from the start of 2020, it was only natural that the team found innovative ways of promoting their passion project. In a picture posted by Ali’s co-star Armie Hammer on his Instagram handle, it was revealed that the team has kicked off the first round of promotions after the release of their trailer. October is looking like a loaded month for Fazal who will witness the releases of his two distinctly different projects – Death on the Nile and the much-awaited Mirzapur 2.

Fazal shot for the film for three months in the UK last year. On the home turf, the actor has the second season of Mirzapur coming that is expected to drop on Amazon Prime later this year.

After his major motion picture titular lead in Victoria and Abdul, actor Ali Fazal will now be starring opposite the globally renowned and loved Gal Gadot most famously known as playing the role of Wonder Woman. The duo are set to star in the on screen modern day adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel Death on the Nile and is set be directed by Kenneth Branagh. He has to his credit having directed some immensely popular and successful film including the first film the Thor series, Hamlet, As You Like It, Murder on the orient express amongst many others.
The film is based on the famous Agatha Christie Novel “Death on the Nile”. It explores the investigation Hercule poirot sets upon due to certain mysterious events that occur on a cruise ship on the Nile. A murder. As the investigation goes on and a handful of suspects come into question, several of the suspects also meet their demise, further deepening the mystery.
The film is part of the series by 20th Century Fox which earlier saw the much successful film, Murder on the Orient Express taking in major monies at the box office worldwide. This film too boasted of a stellar cast including Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp and others. Death on the Nile has previously been made in 1978 starring legends including Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow and others.
The film goes on floors later this month in London and parts of Europe.
Confirming the news, Ali said, “Yes I am part of this wonderful journey and I look forward to being a part of it. My mother and I have always been huge fans of Agatha Christie Novels.”
