Kolkata film festival to screen Lihaaf in competition round

Rahat Kazmi’s upcoming movie Lihaaf which has already won hearts of people round the globe is all set to participate in 25th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) in Competition round next week.

Organized by West Bengal Film Centre and founded in 1995, KIFF is the second oldest international film festival in India. The organization is recognized by International Federation of Film Producers’ Association (FIAPF-Paris), an international authority of film festivals.

KIFF would be inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the presence of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Mahesh Bhatt, Rakhee Gulzar, Kumar Shahani among others at Netaji Indoor Stadium on November 8. This year, the festival, which will continue till November 15, has received approximately 2,500 entries from 76 countries which include 214 feature films, 152 short films and documentaries for competition and non-competition rounds.

Nevertheless, the parameters of competition are on two levels, Indian and International level. Lihaaf would be participating in the competition of Indian Film Languages, consisting Roya Sadat, Ajja Husain, and Jeffrey Jeturian as jury members. Meanwhile, the Best Film would receive Rs 7 lakh and the Best Director in this category would receive cash prize of Rs 5 lakh along with Hiralal Sen Memorial Award.

The festival would be attended by the starcast of Lihaaf along with the director and the producers in Kolkata. The team is excited to participate in the event after the successful screening of their film worldwide.

Directed by Rahat Kazmi, the film is produced by Tariq Khan, Zeba Sajid, Namita Lal, Ashish Wagh, Umesh Shukla and co-produced by Oscar winner Marc Baschet. The film features Tannishtha Chatterjee, Sonal Sehgal and Anushka Sen in the lead roles while Shoib Nikash Shah and Mir Sarwar would be seen in parallel lead roles. Rahat Kazmi’s film Lihaaf is all set to showcase at 5 significant film festivals of the world namely International Film Festival of Kerala, India Week Hamburg, International Queer Film Festival Playa (Mexico), 25th Kolkata International Film Festival and Gangneung International Film Festival (South Korea).

Rahat Kazmi is literally going places with his range and quality of work. The director, who was recently in news for staging a dialogue with Oscar awardee and producer Marc Baschet on their Indo-France co-production Ismat Chugtai’s Lihaaf at the Cannes Film Festival, is a proud man now. The film is now selected to be officially screened at five major film festivals being held in Hamburg, Korea, Mexico, Kolkata and Kerala.

The story of Lihaaf revolves around the most controversial and celebrated story of legendary Indian writer Ismat Chugtai, which deal with issues of homosexuality, women’s sexuality and sex as a taboo in Indian society. Tannistha Chatterjee plays the iconic role of Ismat Chughtai. She is the only Indian actress to have been ever nominated for BAFTA. Meanwhile, Sonal Sehgal plays Begum Jaan, who has acted in many films and is known for her performance in Nagesh Kuknoor’s acclaimed Aashayein.

Singapore based actress and producer Namita Lal will be seen playing Rabbo in the film, and her company Nutzaboutme Cinema are also producers of the film.

The film has been co-written by Rahat Kazmi and Sonal Sehgal. The producers are Rahat Kazmi, Tariq Khan, Zeba Sajid, Namita Lal (Singapore), Umesh Shukla, Utpal Acharya and Ashish Wagh. It is co-produced by Oscar winning producer Marc Baschet (known for Oscar winning No Man’s Land and Lunch Box and Golda Sellam of Cinelink France is a consultant on this project.

Shoib Nikash Shah plays the role of Manto. Shoib has done many films including Million Dollar Nomad and Mantostaan. Veteran bollywood actor Virendra Saxena will be seen in an important role in the film, too.

Marc said, “I first heard the story of Lihaaf (The Quilt) when I met Namita in the film bazaar in Goa in November last year. I was struck by the theme of the story and decided to follow the development of the film as a mentor. Golda, who also heard the narration from Namita in Goa, was happy to be a consultant to this team. Apart from the story, I was also very impressed with this young team of professional film makers who bring such sensitive, delicate stories to life on the big screen.”

The producers plan to announce the release date the film soon. The film will take you behind the curtain, play in the shadows of same-sex desire, and will lift the veil off the longings of the women in Muslim households.

Rahat Kazmi’s Lihaaf wins Best Film LGBT Award at IIFM, Boston USA

Lihaaf was screened at Sama Film festival, Sweden and Indian International film festival Boston, USA yesterday and it was in nominations for best film at Sweden and, best film, best director and best actress at IIFFM Boston. Lihaaf won best film title whereas Neena Gupta won best actress and Sonal Sehgal was was also a nominee for the film congratulated the senior actress through social media. Rahat Kazmi’s Lihaaf is traveling to many countries and top film festivals and the team is totally overwhelmed with the response they are getting from all over the world. Film is yet to screen in Mexico and Hamburg soon where audience is waiting for the film.

Lihaaf has become the talk of the time before its release. Makers reveal that they are getting distribution opportunities from different countries for theatrical distribution in different languages, so they are just working on a plan to streamline the distribution of the film.

Lihaaf’s show sold out in Singapore Film festival

We all know that filmmaker Rahat Kazmi’s film Lihaaf is set to premiere in Singapore South Asian International Film Festival (Sg. SAIFF) this Sunday. The big news is that the film’s demand is so much that all the tickets have been already booked two days prior to the show!

Singapore film lovers came to know about its houseful screening at Berlin and Babylon and booked its tickets in advance and now when more people are turning up, there are no seats left!

Director Rahat Kazmi is overwhelmed on receiving so much love from the audience abroad. Sharing this delightful news, he said, “People are enquiring for tickets and approaching us for more screenings. Seeing this huge response, we are planning for a theatrical release in the country soon after the festival gets over.”

Actress Sonal Sehgal, Anushka Sen and Namita Lal are present at Singapore tp present he film for audience for Sunday show along with the filmmaker Rahat Kazmi.

He further added that distributors from Germany and USA have already expressed their interest for theatrical release of the film and so, Lihaaf would be screened for normal audience in these countries and now, also in Singapore for those who could not manage to grab a seat in premiere shows.

For the show on September 1, 2019 (Sunday) at Golden Village Suntec City at 6:15 pm, Rahat Kazmi would be attending the festival along with his team which includes actresses Sonal Sehgal and Anushka Sen. Rahat Kazmi’s film Lihaaf won German hearts

Indian International filmmaker Rahat Kazmi’s film, Lihaaf, recently premiered as the closing film at 16th Indisches Filmfestival, Stuttgart 2019.

The film, which is based on Ismat Chughtai’s most celebrated and most-controversial story, garnered a lot of appreciation from the audience present at the time of screening.

The director and his team could not mark their presence as they were shooting for their next film. However, the actress of the movie, Sonal Sehgal attended the festival on behalf of her team, alongwith the Oscar-winning producer of the movie, Marc Baschet and Co-Editor and Creative Consultant of the film, Golda Sellam, who is also a renowned Film Expert of Europe.

The 16th Indisches Filmfestival was held in Stuttgart (Germany) from July 17 to 21, 2019 and presented feature films, documentaries, children’s and animated films of all length and format, followed by an Award Ceremony on July 21, 2019 for best feature, documentary, short film and so on.

Actress Sonal Sehgal who is also a co-writer in the movie says, “Lihaaf was supposed to premiere at Stuttgart as closing film but due to the heavy demand, the organisers screened it twice. Nonetheless, we received an amazing response from the audience.”

Meanwhile, Lihaaf was also screened at Indo-German Filmweek which was held in Babylon (Berlin) from July 11 to 24, 2019. Started in February 2013 by Stephan Ottenbruch, the Indo-German Filmweek is held annually where Indian films of all languages are screened followed by workshops and discussions with the filmmakers and team.

Lihaaf had two screenings at Indo-German Filmweek and there also, the organisers added another screening on public demand. Sonal Sehgal added, “Usually, the audience watch the screening and leaves the hall whereas, in both Berlin and Stuttgart, we were amazed to see that Q&A round after our screening went on for more than 45 minutes. The audience were just so overwhelmed. She was surprised to know that German students had read Lihaaf as it was in their curriculum. They asked questions about the making of the film, women author writing such a bold story, on homosexuality and how the theme is more relevant in the present era than at the time, the story was written.”

No denying the fact, Lihaaf attracted German Press and made headlines in both the festivals. The film is co-written and directed by Rahat Kazmi and produced by Tariq Khan, Zeba Sajid, Namita Lal, Umesh Shukla, and Ashish Wagh and co-produced by Marc Baschet.
