Karan Aanand: Media and Celebrities can grow together, not apart.

Bollywood is all about glitz, glamour, and setting trends. In India, B-town stars have the country’s largest follower. There will be many people who would be very interested in what their favourite artists do or say, what is talked about. As they see their stars on the screen, again and again, people’s interest in the star’s life increases. They form an attachment to the artist who remains after watching the film. Anything a star says has a huge impact on public opinion and alters it to some extent. We love seeing our dearest Bollywood celebrities so active on different social media platforms. And the media delivers all these things to a common man. Media has a big hand in making an artist a star overnight, that artist becomes someone’s ideal, people follow him. In this way, media is the medium through which an ordinary artist becomes special. In the same way, a media person or agency is also doing its job to reach people to their favourites. The relationship between media and celebrity is like two lines of a track, which go on far and wide. They complement each other.

Bollywood actors have told how media and celebrities are related to each other. Talking about this topic, Bollywood actor Karan Aanand said, “The relationship between the actor and the media is like a husband and wife, everything is good when a new marriage takes place. Slowly things start changing. Similarly, when the actor comes in the beginning, they need media to make him a big star. This is a vise -versa process. And when the actor gradually becomes a big star, then he starts setting his boundaries in which the media is objectified. This is a bit wrong, which should not happen.”

He added, “The sweet squabbles of media and celebrity will continue, as both need each other to move forward. Media acts as a link between an actor and a common man. Both can grow together. Just keep in mind that both of them should live together and do their work diligently within the limits of dignity.”

Sona Mohapatra’s upcoming song for World Music Day puts a spotlight on our most valuable gift in these times

Sona has conceptualised a music video “Portraits of Quarantine” as an idea to timestamp this tough period of isolation with a ‘moving photo album’ of her band, crew & team members & further on the people they have shared this tough, unpredictable lockdown with. There is also a message to many who are battling loneliness & depression to reach out & seek support & in turn to people who know them to rally around & lean in. Everybody needs somebody who can remind them of their own value, beauty & strength!

The songstress & producer performs a soulful song – ‘Tori Surat- Unplugged’, with a chill lounge soundscape & Ameer Khusraus poetry with her band. The video features the ‘faces or surats’ that make this period an easier one to navigate. A moving extended family ‘photo album’ to watch back in better times & remember the quarantine & it’s lessons.

Speaking about it Sona says, “We don’t have to have “mental illness” to experience psychological issues during COVID-19’s stressful impact on humanity. To cope, everyone needs connection & compassion. If we are lucky we have shared this quarantine period with someone who provides that support, be it by being physically around or even available virtually. This music video is an ode to that.

“World Music Day is around the corner & is a wonderful occasion that lets my whole team come together virtually to do what we do best; perform music that not only entertains people but also uplifts their soul. Crehyl Periera is a very talented young music arranger & he produced a jazz-lounge track for Ram Sampath’s composition that I know will be loved. The music video has been shot individually by each team member but edited in the Himachal Pradesh hills by Nitesh Bisht. The piano, melodica, flutes & the electric & acoustic guitars, the percussion including cajon, the Hindustani & Konakol bols performed in this track make ‘Tori Surat Unplugged’ a truly world music gem! A perfect blend of the music of the west & the east too. The last few months haven’t been easy on any of us. Today when I look back, I feel it is important for us to cherish & celebrate our support systems; the ones we share our lockdown & homes with. “Portraits of Quarantine” celebrates that thought. Tori Surat is timeless poetry by a Sufi master & I hope my relationship & love with my band & team also endures similarly.”

Singer Arpita Chakraborty unites with director Prasad Kadam for a romantic single

Singer Arpita Chakraborty, who has sung many film songs for ‘Total Dhamaal’, ‘Satyagraha’, ‘Ragini MMS2’, ‘Hero’ and ‘Bezubaan Ishq’ is all set to release a single. It is a romantic number ‘Makhmali’ and directed by the talented Prasad Kadam. The song will feature ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ actor Omkar Kapoor in it.

Kadam, who has directed a lot of ad films, said, “It was fun shooting this music video. Whether you are shooting for a film or a single or music video, the only change is the scale and duration of your involvement. I had been approached earlier to direct a music video for them, but I didn’t want to do something mediocre. I wasn’t interested in directing a single, which portrayed girls wearing skimpy clothes and and dancing in a bar. When Arpita expressed her idea for an original song, I was excited.”

Prasad added, “With “Makhmali” we are trying to bring back retro gangsta era. We had planned what exactly we wanted to achieve. The look, the color palette, the choreography, even the kind of guns we have used was important. I am sure the audiences will enjoy watching the song.”

Prasad has in the past couple of years directed ads for many MNCs and corporates. He commented how he shot an ad for Enrich during the lockdown. Prasad said, “Enrich is one of our regular clients, we shot an ad for them in the lockdown too. We asked actors to shoot videos and send from home. Our ads for Gleneagles Global Hospitals for Cancer Awareness recieved many awards.” The director also reveals how he plans to direct a feature film after the music video.

Ask Prasad, what or who inspires him the most and he said, “Ram Gopal Verma made some highly inspiring film in the 90s. ‘Satya’, Kaun, Company, Rangeela – they are all wonderful films. I wanted to make films the way he was doing back then. Mani Ratnam’s films have also had a big influence. When I was in UK I got closer to world cinema. I would love to make films in the sci-fi genre. If my first film clicks, I would want to work on a sci-fi film. I have a script in place, too.”

Pankaj Dheer nearly got killed during the shoot of the Kurukshetra War

The epic show Mahabharat produced and directed by late filmmaker B.R. Chopra along with his son Ravi Chopra was the most loved TV show back in the day and has returned during the lockdown and is now seen on Star Bharat.

Amongst the elaborate star-cast, Mahabharat fame, Pankaj Dheer is highly appreciated for his role as the character Karna. Interestingly, not many know about the amount of hard work the artist had to put in the trying times he faced.

There was one incident where while the team was shooting in the scorching heat of Rajasthan, Pankaj was in a shot where he was in a chariot which broke mid-way and the horses went haywire and the prompt artist spontaneously jumped out. It is said that the artist was seriously injured near his eye during the mishap and later had a surgery for the same.

Well, but all is well that ends well and we are happy that the actor recovered from the unfortunate incident

To watch more of Pankaj Dheer, tune in to watch ‘Mahabharat’ from Monday to Friday at 8pm only on Star Bharat
