Atul Kasbekar in talks to get COVID insurance for his slate of films

While actors are bravely stepping out to shoot with a limited crew, it cannot be denied that film shoots can no longer be what they were in the pre-COVID world. In a first, Bollywood producers Atul Kasbekar and Tanujj Garg of Ellipsis Entertainment are in talks with a legal expert to get COVID insurance for not just their future projects hit for the industry at large. Amongst the first of their line-up to be covered is Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin starrer ‘Loop Lapeta’, which is the Indian adaptation of the German cult film ‘Run Lola Run’.

In a chat, Atul said, “We are still in talks with a legal expert – Anand Desai of DSK LEGAL. What COVID insurance will essentially entail is the same as what an accident insurance covers. Insuring a film so far entailed guarding the film against unforeseen incidents like illness of an actor or occurrence of natural calamities leading to delays in the film schedule. Because COVID is relatively new, we are still working upon the details but essentially works in a similar fashion. For instance, a crew member tests positive, the entire movie crew might have to be possibly quarantined. In that case, the producers will be covered from the money they are spending on days lost.”

Kasbekar also says that the insurance will protect their crew members just as much. In case any of the key members of the crew test positive, they won’t be replaced unduly. “There are a lot of permutations and combinations to be worked upon. But one of the key things to keep in mind is that a fair number of people will potentially be exposed to a film set and filmmakers trust a certain set of people on the job. So, in case, the DOP of a film were to test positive mid-film, it is likely to stall the shoot of the movie till he recovers or till a suitable replacement is found in double quick time to retain the visual language of the motion picture. So there are these points being discussed. Tanujj and I are working on a draft of the insurance and hoping that it materializes soon.”

Loop Lapeta was to be shot through April and May in Mumbai and Goa. The film that will 70% be shot outdoors has had to rework its dates completely in the face of the lockdown, owing to the pandemic. Atul admits that the shooting schedule of the film stands tentative at the moment. “Given the fact that it’s largely an outdoorsy film, we cannot risk a shoot in the rains. Though Goa has opened up for tourists, the risk of shooting with a large unit is far too many. We can logically resume shooting the film post-monsoon. So if all goes well, sometime post-Diwali is what we are eyeing.”

Inspired by Manish Mundra, the PPE drive was spearheaded by Atul Kasbekar and was done in partnership with Tring India to protect the frontline workers who are fighting the war against COVID 19.

In a video, Vidya, Sonakshi, Ali, Dia cricketer Harbhajan Singh, commentator Harsha Bhogle representing their colleagues sent a powerful thank you message to the doctors who are on the frontline ensuring the rest of the country is safe in the confines of their homes. From KEM Hospital and Cama in Mumbai, the initiative has reached other cities like Hyderabad, Ratnagiri, Lucknow, Pune, Indore, Punjab and Delhi.

Dedicating the video to the doctors and other officials at the frontline, the actors in a powerful message heralded them as the real-time heroes.

Kasbekar says, “While all of us are safe at home under lockdown, it’s important that we celebrate them today and value them for the incredible and strenuous work they are putting in for over 100 days now. Our entire perception of heroism has altered in these times. When we started off the initiative, it was the need of the hour. While the Government officials are doing their best, it is also the duty of the citizens to step up in whatever ways they can. A bunch of us came together and Manish (Mundra) has been a big help through the process guiding us to those in need.”

Emraan Hashmi and Guru Randhawa shoots a CHEAT song

The producers of the forthcoming Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Cheat India’ shot a promotional music video, featuring Hashmi and the current sensation Guru Randhawa. This was a coup of sorts as their first-time pairing is bound to enjoy phenomenal mass outreach when the song comes out.

Titled ‘Kudi Daaru Wargia’, the track, composed and rendered by Guru, was picturized on an elaborate set in Mumbai. This marks the first time that an A-list Bollywood star has featured in a video with Guru, who has continuously belted out chartbusters like ‘Ban Ja Rani’, ‘Lahore’, ‘High Rated Gabru’, ‘Suit Suit’ and ‘Kaun Nachdi’ in recent times.

The video has been directed by Nitin Parmar of Equinox Films, the renowned production company helmed by ace ad-man and ‘Neerja’ director Ram Madhvani. It has been choreographed by Vijay Ganguly (‘Jagga Jasoos’, ‘Tumhari Sulu’, ‘Stree’, ‘Badhaai Ho’, etc.) and also features the debuting heroine Shreya Dhanwanthary along with a multitude of students, given the film’s story about the education system.

Said the producers, “We knew that pairing Emraan and Guru would be huge. It was Bhushan’s (Kumar) idea to go with this song as it has chartbuster potential. Keen to give the video a young and stylish vibe for the millennials, Ellipsis roped in Equinox to ideate and shoot. We are confident that the track will be the party anthem of every youngster in the new year.”
