Renowned filmmaker Onir, known for championing queer narratives and independent cinema, is excited to announce that his latest film, We Are Faheem & Karun, will have its international premiere at the prestigious 39th BFI Flare on March 20 and 22, 2025.

Sharing his enthusiasm, Onir stated, “This is a historic moment as it marks the first time a Kashmiri-language film, shot entirely in the remote border regions of Gurez, will be screened at the festival. Additionally, it is the first queer narrative from the Valley.” The film tells the heartfelt story of Karun, a security guard from Kerala working at a construction site, and Faheem, a young Kashmiri college student, as they navigate love amidst the backdrop of cultural and political complexities.
The selection of We Are Faheem & Karun at BFI Flare is a significant milestone for Kashmiri representation in international cinema. Onir emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “I am incredibly proud that my Kashmiri cast members will also be attending the screening in London. Representation has always been crucial to me.” While the lead role of Karun is played by Akash Menon from Kerala, the film also features a talented ensemble of Kashmiri actors, including Mir Tawseef, Mir Salman, Bashir Lone, and Sana Javeid.
Acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta, who is presenting the film, expressed her deep admiration for its storytelling and themes. She remarked, “I am honored to present We Are Faheem & Karun by Onir. This film resonated with me on many levels, as it beautifully explores love, friendship, and duty while being set against the realities of geopolitical conflict. In today’s world, where division often takes center stage, it is essential to remind ourselves of our shared humanity. Films like this play a vital role in keeping that conversation alive.”
With its powerful storytelling, authentic representation, and bold exploration of queer and Kashmiri identities, We Are Faheem & Karun by Onir is poised to be a groundbreaking addition to contemporary cinema. Its premiere at BFI Flare 2025 is set to mark an important moment in the ongoing evolution of inclusive storytelling on the global stage.
