Actor turned casting director Deepak Soni is busy shooting for Rajshri Productions upcoming web series Sangemarmar for Jio Studios. Directed by Vikram Ghai, the web series stars Sourabh Raaj Jain and Sheen Dass in lead roles.
Deepak who hails from Orai, Bundelkhand had always dreamt to become an actor. He has participated in plays during school and college times. After coming to city of dreams Mumbai he did street plays along with auditions. His first break was Balaji’s show DUS on MTV. The journey continued with numerous shows like Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali, Kumkum Bhagya, Crime Petrol, Vidrohi, Yeh Hai Chahatein, Apradh, Harphoul Mohini, Shaadi Mubarak, Story Nine Months Ki, Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin and many more.
Says Deepak, “I did Crime Petrol, Dial 100 and few more shows where I played a cop. One day I thought that I will be typecast if I continue to play a cop. I was getting offers for cop’s role. So I took a break from small screen to do something different. I continued giving auditions. One fine day I started working as casting director and done my job for few production houses.”
Deepak Soni has also worked in few films as well as web series. When asked why he turned casting director, the actor answers, “Well, as an actor I use to give many auditions to different casting directors. I always had few questions and curiosity about the other side. I wanted to understand the craft of casting actors. So I turned casting director and luckily I got the work also. While casting I came to know many aspects of acting such as dialogue delivery, body language with a difference for a particular character.”
Working in three different mediums like films, TV serials and web series how is the experience? “See as an actor all three are satisfying. Apart from long hours shoot there is little chance to get marked when you do episodic work in daily soaps. In web series all the characters are important whether small or big. So you get an opportunity to get marked. In films even if you play a cameo or small role, you can definitely make an impact on audience. Who can forget Manoj Bajpayee in Satya or Mazhar Khan in Shaan?” concludes Deepak.
