Marathi Film PHULA Showcases Waghya–Murli Folk Culture

The rich and vibrant traditions of Maharashtra’s folk culture take centre stage in the upcoming Marathi film PHULA, which tells the powerful story of a woman through the lens of the traditional Waghya–Murli heritage. Rooted in cultural authenticity, the film promises audiences an immersive experience filled with soulful storytelling and genuine folk music. In an era where film albums often feature only a few songs, PHULA brings back the charm of a full musical experience with an album of seven songs — a rare treat for Marathi cinema lovers.

PHULA is a remarkable initiative by a group of passionate young talents from Atapadi village in the Sangli district of Maharashtra. Driven by the desire to create something meaningful and new, these budding filmmakers have come together to bring this culturally rich project to life.

The poster and music launch of PHULA was celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur in the presence of senior journalist from ABP Majha and Senior Executive Vice President of ABP News Mr. Rajeev Khandekar. The event was attended by the entire team along with renowned saxophonist Raj Soda, making it a memorable occasion for everyone involved.

PHULA is produced by wrestler Ajit Shivaji Jadhav and presented by Shivsharvil Movie and Bodhi Cinema. The film PHULA is written and directed by Abhishek Javir, while the screenplay is penned by Ravikiran Javir. Music for the film is composed by Samadhan Ewale, with creative direction by Amar Deokar. Cinematography is handled by Pratap Joshi, art direction by Atul Lokhande, and editing by Rahul Prajapati.

PHULA’s soulful soundtrack features voices of talented singers including Vaishali Samant, Vaishali Made, Rohit Raut, Ravindra Khomane, Vaishali Kulkarni, Vaishnavi Adode and Akash Navgire. Choreography is by Ashutosh Kirtikar and Srushti Jadhav, while costumes are designed by Komal Javir and Akshata Patil, with make-up by Samadhan Bhore.

Speaking at the event, Rajeev Khandekar emphasised the importance of preserving and celebrating folk traditions. He noted that PHULA sheds light on the real lives of artists whose work we admire but rarely understand deeply, and appreciated the effort of young filmmakers who have come together to create a meaningful film PHULA based on the life and traditions of the Waghya–Murli community.

The story of PHULA revolves around the emotional and social struggles of an innocent girl born into the Murli tradition. Inspired by cultural forms such as Tamasha Phad and Jagran Gondhal, the narrative beautifully reflects the folk heritage of Maharashtra. seven songs of PHULA including “Kanha Tuji Basari,” “Maja Raja Malhari,” “Asara Tu Mere Jivacha,” “Kunku Koral Kapali,” “Murli Jhale Me Ga Bai,” “Kapali Sajal Bashing,” and “Darbi Cha Tharar” — are deeply rooted in folk culture and express the emotions and experiences of the Murli community.

With its authentic cultural backdrop, meaningful storytelling and rich musical album, PHULA promises audiences a unique cinematic experience when it releases in theatres across Maharashtra on April 17.
