The Mohan Bagan Athletic Club was established in 1889 by three well-known aristocratic Bengali families in North Kolkata. The team won its first trophy only 15 years later but under their coach, Sailen Basu, quickly rose in the ranks. In 1911, it was invited to take part in the prestigious Indian Football Association (IFA) Shield. With brilliant players like Hiralal Mukherjee, Bhuti Sukul, Sudhir Chatterjee, Manmohan Mukherjee, Rajen Sengupta, Nilmadhav Bhattarya, Kanu Roy, Habul Sarkar, Abhilash Ghosh, the team captained by Shibdas Bhaduri who played alongside his older brother Bijoydas Bhaduri, notched up one win after another, making it to the final where they were up against East Yorkshire Regiment, an elite branch of the British army. On July 29, almost 10,000 football enthusiasts lined up as the players took the field. The Indians were a match for the better trained British players in every way till Sergeant Jackson scored the first goal with just 15 minutes left for the final. Mohun Bagan responded with one of their own and then it was a fight to the finish.

John says “What makes 1911 special is that it is not just about the coach, the players or even the game, it’s also about India’s freedom struggle.  Like with Parmanu, the idea is to educate in an entertaining way so viewers walk out of the theatre saying, ‘Wow, I didn’t know this!’

Nikkhil says “I’ve been wanting to make a film set in Kolkata, talking about its people, culture and heritage. 1911 is even better because it moves beyond Bengal to encompass all of India and its history. It’s a huge responsibility to tell this story right as it’s almost folklore to the people of Bengal as well as it’s so close to John. I’m thrilled he thinks that I will be able to do it justice”

Bhushan Kumar says “We are extremely happy to announce our first film as part of our six film deal and it gives me great pleasure to be associated with a film which tells the story of the emergence of the most iconic club in India, as well as a truly inspiring moment in our history.”

John Abraham to don the producer’s hat

Post the success of Satyameva Jayate and after already working on Batla House, 1911 will be one of the most exciting projects coming out of the recently announced 6 film deal.

Jashn Agnihotri – First Actress To Do Double Role in Punjabi Film

Punjabi film fans can’t seem to be having enough of Jashn Agnihotri. Guess that’s why she has been signed up for not one but two roles in the same film, making her the first Punjabi actress to do a double role in a long time.

The bubbly actress started out as a model and did over a 100 print ad and TV commercials including the likes of Indian Oil Servo, Sahara, Inalsa and many others. Along with ad shoots Jashn also featured in a few hit music videos including the likes of Damdaar Boy by T Series and also hosted the famous reality show No. 1 Dramebaaz while pursuing her passion for cinema.

“It was during my modeling days that Mr. Madhur Bhandarkar spotted me and asked to audition for a song in his film Indu Sarkar,” recalls Jashn how she bagged the song Yeh Pal in Indu Sarkar. Jashn later went onto do a guest appearance in the film Genius as DJ Jashn.

Her upcoming Punjabi film titled Chan Tara has her in a double role and she can’t stop gushing over her experience while shooting for the film, “It’s a full on commercial film with comedy, romance and drama,” says Jashn while further adding, “I have worked really hard to mark the delicate difference between the 2 characters wherein one girl is upmarket, sophisticated and ambitious whereas other girl has a humble background and has a rawness & is desi punjaban personified. I ardently followed Hema Maliniji in Seeta Aur Geeta and Late Srideviji in Chalbaaz and took inspiration from these veterans actresses to pull off this challenging double role. Directed by Vinit Atwal, produced by Satnam Tatla, Chan Tara has an ensemble star cast from Punjabi and Bollywood industry and I am confident this film will be liked by audience as it’s a thorough entertainer.”

Jashn is totally on cloud nine with the projects coming her way and doesn’t seem to be in any mood to rest, “After Chan Tara I have two releases lined up in the coming year, one Hindi and one Punjabi film.” Ask her if she doesn’t want to stick to Bollywood alone and she says, “I am language agnostic, I’m an actress and I will continue seeking good work that I get in whichever industry possible.”

Khalid Siddiqui quits social media, says can’t take negativity

It’s social media detox time for actor Khalid Siddiqui. The actor says that once he realised that most of his free time was going towards social media, he decided to make this change. “I have completely gone of social media as I realised I was spending too much time on it. And I feel I was looking outwards rather than inwards. It’s not really great to look into other people’s lives and neglect yours,” he says.

The actor adds, “Social media governs our life these days. You are more concerned about what pictures to post, what status or caption to put, how many people have liked it, who’s doing what. On Twitter, I feel there is too much negativity, differences of opinion, everyone is sitting on each other’s throat. There is just so much criticism, sarcasm, abuses and wrong information. There is too much negativity and I am done with this negativity,” he says.

How is the detox going for him, you ask? “I am feeling so relieved and at peace. It’s like living a new life where I am actually seeing myself, feeling like myself and being myself. I used to read a lot which I was missing the most. I am glad I am back to it. I am watching shows and films, spending more quality time with kids and now I just pick up my phone and talk to friends rather be on Instagram or Twitter, looking into life of people whom I don’t even know,” he says, adding, “I won’t say social media is wrong but one should know how to use it, control it. I realised I was getting sunk into it deep and so had to take a sabbatical for a while.”
