Web Series are exploring unconventional yet relatable topics for storytelling

Over-the-top content (OTT) has witnessed a massive uptake by consumers who want to view content as per their choice of time and platform. Shifting paradigms, the availability of unlimited content space has given rise to both innovation and experimentation, facilitating a buffet of varied entertainment for the viewers. Pioneering this change is VOOT, Viacom18’s video on demand streaming platform that explores unconventional and relatable stories inspired by what’s relevant around us.



Here are the top shows that clearly stand apart from the usual vanilla dramas:

Time Out: The six-episode series, which features Tahir Raj Bhasin and Sarah Jane Dias, is the story of Rahul and Radha’s perfect romance, perfect relationship and perfect life until he realizes that he’s been living the life he’s supposed to and not necessarily the one he wants to.

Untag: The show delves into the lives of regular people with seemingly harmless tags, their dreams, their inhibitions and most importantly their struggles. It is a story about losing the tags, the labels, the fear and most importantly the shame that comes with a tag. It showcases the philosophy of ‘you’re different, you’re better than the tag you’re given’. The series featured Meiyang Chang (Nischay), VJ Andy (Cyrus) Dipannita Sharma (Anahita), Shiv Pandit (Prithvi), Anjali Anand (Shikha) and Naveen Polishetty (Sumeet). This light-hearted show celebrates friendship, relationships, love and the uniqueness of each of these journeys.

It’s Not that Simple: Featuring Swara Bhaskar, Vivan Bhatena, Akshay Oberoi and Karanveer Mehra in lead roles ‘It’s Not That Simple’ revolves around the idea of marriage, relationships, a woman’s stand in a marriage and love. Swara plays the role of a 31 year old married lady who has lost herself amidst all her responsibilities. The show traces her journey and how she tries to rediscover her life and set new rules for herself through the other three characters.

SOCIAL – VIU: It is a social media thriller directed by Sashi Sudigala starring Rana Dagubatti. The story revolves around a missing girl and the four people (including her brother, played by TVF actor Naveen Kasturia) who set out to solve the mystery.

Romil and Jugal- Alt Balaji: The series, a take on Romeo and Juliet, revolves around a gay couple trying to stay in love in a homophobic society.

Dev DD- Alt Balaji :This incredibly addictive drama has the protagonist dealing with love, heartbreak, alcoholism, and bad decisions before eventually destroying herself.

RISE- CHEERS | Featuring the super talented Vikrant Massey, this web series is a wonderful exploration of the mysterious ways life works its magic. Massey’s character, Shrey lives out the quintessential work life when life sends him on a soul-searching road trip with his friend’s 55-year-old relative, the most unlikely pillion ever.
